Public Access Computers

User Responsibilities and Guidelines

User Responsibilities

Responsible use of Library Public Access Computers includes;

  • Complying with the Library's posted rules of conduct. 
  • Respecting intellectual property rights by making only authorized copies of copyrighted or licensed data or software.
  • Respecting the privacy of others.
  • Patrons must sign up at the front desk for a time slip on the computer .
  • Refraining from any of the following activities:

    • Altering or damaging software.
    • Altering or damaging the configuration of the Library computers.
    • Illegal or unethical use of the computers or Internet.
    • When your time is up, please promptly get up from the station as there may be other patrons waiting.



User Guidelines

  1. Library computer users must be able to access their computer needs independently of the library staff. 
  2. Mendocino County Library is committed to making computer technology free and available to the public, but training in computer use is the responsibility of the patron.
  3. Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to access the Internet.
  4. Only one person at a time may use a computer, unless on-duty staff grants special permission. People may not congregate at the computers.
  5. There is a 10-cent per page charge for printing. You are liable for all the pages that you print.
  6. The following activities are prohibited:
  • Accessing or transmitting data or materials that are obscene or sexually explicit.
  • Hate mail, harassment or discriminatory remarks.
  • Transmission of any material in violation of any U. S. or state regulations.
    G.  The computer devoted to genealogy studies is owned by the Friends of the Fort Bragg Library and is not for public use at this time.
    H.. The County of Mendocino reserves the right to determine the nature of inappropriate computer use.
    I. Wireless DSL is provided throughout the Library and Laural Street directly in front of the library.
    J. One Ethernet plug is also provided inside the Library for portable computers that are not wireless enabled.
    K. Please remember that this is a Library. Quiet is nice. You must provide your own earphones when sound is activated on any computer.
    L. Patrons who abuse these guidelines may have their computer privileges revoked on a temporary or permanent basis.
    M. Laptop patrons are required to monitor their charging cords to assure they are NOT a tripping hazard.


Wireless DSL

Wireless DSL is available with no strings (or wires) attached. It is available 24/7 in the Library and the adjacent street in front of the Library. The Library  and Friends of the Library assume no responsibility for use or misuse of this free public service. This system is firewalled at the point of entry to the building before wireless transmission. Please be aware of dangers of using an open wireless system when sending personal information over the Internet.
